Kathy is a 17 year old who lives in Tenafly. She still hasn’t taken the SATs or even started studying for them. She’ll probably never take them. That’s because Kathy is in a special school for kids who have Down’s syndrome. One day, a group of teenagers her age came to visit her school. This visit changed Kathy’s life forever. She’ll never forget how the teens came with guitars, flutes, and keyboards and sang and danced the night away with her school friends. She almost cried when one of them hugged her and told her, “I’m so glad we came here, just so we could get to meet you!”
This group of teens is known as the now famous Teen Friendship Club. With over 100 teens coming together every week from all over Bergen County to pitch in and share some smiles, they are making a difference in the lives of thousands of people. The TFC was there raising money for the victims of the tsunami in Asia. They collected over 35 moving boxes full of stuff to bring to victims of Hurricane Katrina. They’re there for the sad, for the lonely, the sick, the suffering, and the poor. They’ve gone to every hospital, nursing home, and special needs facility within Bergen County in the last two years. And they keep doing what they’ve always been doing: They care. They share. They’re there.
The TFC meets Wednesday evenings from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Lubavitch on the Palisades in Tenafly. Community service hours are tracked and recorded for school credits. One more important detail – we never let you go hungry…eight sizzling pies of pizza there to greet you every Wednesday night (we’ll throw in fries and coke with that too).
